The South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) was formed through a mutual agreement between the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (then known as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa) and the Ministry of Hajj from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia back in 1995–1996.
The South African Hajj & Umrah Council (SAHUC) aims to provide: logistical and co-ordinated assistance that is non-discriminatory, spiritually uplifting, and creates a conducive environment for fulfilling the obligations and needs of Hajj (major pilgrimage), whilst ensuring equitable access and equal rights for all South African citizens
The South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) is a constituted body, not for gain; voluntary in nature, for the purpose of promoting and overseeing the welfare, well-being and interests of the South African pilgrims who undertake Hajj and Umrah to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
SAHUC is the only entity recognised by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) for the administration of Hajj in South Africa for Muslim pilgrims.
SAHUC has gone through many iterations over the years. Its membership is made up of 25 organisations that comprise Muslim civic groups and Ulema bodies in South Africa. All member organisations subscribe to the tenets of the Ahlul Sunnah wal Jamaah. (The school of thought that mainstream Muslims identify themselves with).
