Our History

The South African Hajj and Umrah Council was established in 1995 through a collaborative initiative between the Government of South Africa and the Ministry of Hajj of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Its formation addressed the growing need for a single representative body to coordinate Hajj and Umrah matters following concerns relating to inconsistent service delivery, inadequate pilgrim support, and operational challenges experienced by South African pilgrims.

Since then, SAHUC has evolved into a nationally recognised organisation representing the interests of South African pilgrims. Today, the Council comprises 26 affiliated Muslim organisations from across South Africa, united by a shared commitment to serving the Muslim community in accordance with the principles of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah.

Over the past three decades, SAHUC has continued to strengthen relationships with local and international stakeholders while adapting to the changing landscape of Hajj and Umrah administration.
